The National Information Technology Development Authority (NITDA) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) have partnered to help smallholder farmers in Nigeria improve food productivity.
NITDA confirmed the cooperation in a statement on X after its Director-General, Mr. Kashifu Inuwa, welcomed Ms. Ekoye Dede, IFAD Country Director, and her team at the agency’s Corporate Headquarters in Abuja at his office.
In his speech, Mr. Dede expressed gratitude for the support received so far from NIITDA, encouraged continued cooperation, and called on NIITDA to participate in policy dialogue.
“NIITDA DG Inuwa Kashifu agreed to the partnership with the aim of scaling up ICT4D for smallholder farmers, thereby improving food productivity,” the statement said.
Information and Communication Technologies for Development, commonly known as ICT4D, is the practice of using technology to achieve development and humanitarian outcomes.
Inuwa further stressed that the introduction of technology has the potential to revolutionize agriculture and attract Nigerian youths to the sector.
The NITDA Director-General further emphasized the need to leverage the existing ecosystem for expansion in the country.
In a separate development, Inuwa on Wednesday announced his delight at the latest invention of NIJA chat by iCELL.
He said at the launch that this will help build Nigeria’s public digital infrastructure and boost the country’s economy.
Inuwa, who made this known after launching the Nija Chat application in Abuja, said it was a clarion call to all Nigerians at home and abroad to take advantage of modern technology.
The NITDA chief said this would encourage more such innovations in the country.
