NICO takes on Nigerians on the impact of African time as annual roundtable begins
The National Institute of Cultural Orientation (NICO) has said poor time management is part of the factor depriving Nigerian society of its due development.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the two-day Annual Roundtable on Cultural Orientation in Makurdi, Benue State on Tuesday, NICO Director-General, Mr. Ado M. Yahuza, said that although the issue of African Time has always been neglected, stated. Yet, it has consistently missed opportunities, slowed progress, strained relationships, and hindered productivity.
The event, themed “African Time Syndrome: Implications for National Development,” brought together other chief cultural officers, members of the academic community and members of the arts and culture community at the Benue State University College of Health Sciences Auditorium, Makurdi. Ta. . Many young people from across the prefecture also participated.
He asserted that the effects of poor time management go beyond individual habits and affect collective well-being and society’s efficiency, requiring collective attention to eradicate the threat.
“Let us approach this discussion with an open mind and make this gathering a forum for a lively exchange of ideas. Let us ensure that these conversations not only shed light on the challenges posed by the African Time Syndrome, but also work towards cultural harmony and national development. The event was moderated by Professor Gowon Ama Doki of the Department of Dramatic Arts, Benue State University. He noted that the event, scheduled for 10 a.m., ended up starting an hour later than scheduled because people followed African time. He added that ever since he became time conscious, the issue of African time still persists.
“After I became conscious of time, I started hearing stories about African time without really understanding the concept of African time.”
However, he praised NICO for choosing this theme, stressing that time in Africa affects society in many ways without being judged. According to him, the event will shed light on the socio-economic impact of time management errors.
The royal father of the day was Mr. Tule Makurdi, Chief Ol Vincent, who also praised the round table theme.
