NHRC urges FG to establish African Protocol on Human Rights

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered the federal government to enact Article 34 of the African Charter of Human Rights.

Dr. Salamatu Suleiman, Chairman of the NHRC Governing Council, addressed the future of human rights litigation in Nigeria at a town hall meeting in Abuja.

The town hall meeting was the first in a series of events planned to commemorate Human Rights Day on December 6th.

Mr. Suleiman said the establishment of the Protocol will give individuals direct access to the African Commission, allowing for a more accessible and efficient way to seek redress for human rights violations.

According to her, the purpose of the event is to sensitize stakeholders on critical human rights concerns, as well as to facilitate the promotion, protection and enforcement of human rights in Nigeria.

She stressed that the mandate for the National Human Rights Commission is more than just a legal requirement.

“This is a moral imperative and a call to action to build a society where dignity, freedom and justice are the cornerstones of national life.

“Specifically, Chapters 2 and 4, the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Regulations, and the nationalized African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights,” she said.
