NHRC calls for strong intervention for GBV survivors in Bauchi

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC and Bauchi State Office are calling for strong intervention to ensure the early reintegration of survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).

The state commission coordinator, Yachid Dara, made this disclosure in an interview with reporters in Bauchi city on Thursday.

She said the commission recorded 928 GBV cases in the state in 2023 and attributed this statistic to a societal shift in reporting incidents.

She therefore appealed to stakeholders to pay more attention to the vulnerable survivors, most of whom are minors.

She said: “Synergy is essential in the fight against GBV. Statistics show that people are becoming aware of channels to report such issues.

“We also want to seek enforcement of the state’s Violence Against Persons Act (VAPP) and child protection laws.”

Dara said most of the incidents reported in 2023 were related to GBV and land disputes, and this situation was due to increased awareness raising to raise awareness of people's rights.

She further added, “People are starting to realize their rights and there will be many cases in 2023.”

“Everyone should be treated with dignity.”
