NDLEA lists Anambra as a state with high prevalence of drug abuse.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, said Anambra State is one of the states with the highest number of drug abuse cases in the country.

The Anambra State Commandant of the NDLEA, Mr. Daniel Onyisi, said this on Friday when he led police officers in a visit to Dr. Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, in Awka.

Oishi said the sharp increase in drug abuse cases in the country is causing concern.

“In 2018 alone, authorities intercepted 3.38 tonnes of drugs in Anambra State.

“Statistics show that the prevalence of drug abuse in Nigeria alone is 14.4% while the global prevalence of drug abuse is 5.5%.

“One of the reasons for this visit is to formally welcome Mrs. Soludo as the Chairman of the Anambra State Narcotics Control Board.

“This committee will be an action-driven movement towards the complete eradication of drug use in Anambra State,” he said.

In her response, the governor's wife reiterated her readiness to work with government agencies and lead the ongoing fight against drug abuse in the state.

“These are horrifying statistics and we need a more honest and committed approach to the war on drugs, starting with identifying the manufacturers of these deadly substances.

“However, my initiative, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, has been leading the anti-drug campaign in Anambra.

“However, there is a critical need for a united response in the face of what drug abuse is wreaking on society, especially among young people.

“I am committed to working closely with the authorities, strengthening community involvement in the fight and insisting on the need to follow up on every case until justice is served,” she said.
