NCC pledges support for Meta's submarine cable initiative
The Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, has made law-abiding companies like Meta (formerly Facebook) proactive in responding to the demands of Nigerians. Maida was speaking during a visit by a Meta delegation led by Vice President for Africa, Middle East and Turkey, Kojo Boakye, to the NCC headquarters in Abuja, where he spoke about regulatory support for all investors, including operators in the country. Mr. Boakye informed the NCC chief that the purpose of the visit was to congratulate the EVC on his appointment as President and to inform Nigeria of the ongoing efforts to lay the 2 Africa Cable.
Boakye said the 45,000-kilometre-long 2Africa submarine cable is one of the world's largest submarine cable projects, interconnecting Europe (eastward via Egypt), Asia (via Saudi Arabia) and Africa. He said the system would be operational in 2023 and have a design capacity of up to 180 terabytes per second (Tbps), exceeding the combined capacity of all submarine cables currently serving Africa.
Mr Boakye said 2Africa will provide much-needed internet capacity and reliability across much of Africa, complementing the fast-growing capacity needs in the Middle East, and in particular increasing 4G, 5G and fixed broadband access for billions of people. He appealed to the NCC for assistance in overcoming all legal and regulatory hurdles necessary to install the submarine cable, which will complement Nigeria's existing critical infrastructure.
