Navy intercepts 86 billion stolen Norwegian crude oil

A Nigerian Navy operation in the Niger Delta region between January and February 2024 led to the arrest of various criminal organizations operating in the region and the recovery of stolen crude oil.

This was confirmed in a statement by the Nigerian Chief of Naval Intelligence, Rear Admiral AO Ayo Vaughan.

The recovered items were 60,815.77 barrels of crude oil, valued at approximately $5.218 billion (8.12 billion naira). 557,580 liters of illegally refined automatic gas oil (AGO) worth N497 million. Multipurpose Kerosene (DPK) worth N5.5 million and 9,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirits (PMS) worth N5.49 million.

Ayo Vaughan said the alleged oil theft ring was worth about 8.6 billion Norwegian naira, which could be used for criminal activities and threaten national security and prosperity.

He also said a total of 51 wooden boats were arrested and 105 illegal refinery furnaces, 85 reservoirs and 288 dugouts were destroyed.

He added that 41 illegal refinery facilities, an IRS, and three fiber boats were also destroyed during the operation.
