The Nasarawa State Government has announced that elections for chairpersons and members of the 13 local government councils in the state will be held on August 31st.

Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC), Mr. Ayuba Wandai, said this at a stakeholder meeting with officials of the State Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) in Lafia on Tuesday.

Mr Wandai said the current chairman and councilors were elected on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 and assumed office on Friday, October 8, 2021, for a three-year term, ending on October 7.

“This is our second initiative. The first was in August 2023 under the Commission Establishment Act.

“The law mandates that preparations for elections begin one year before the end of a public official's term.

“The commission is a law-abiding body and has continued to promote compliance with the laws governing the conduct of LG elections in the state,” he added.

The committee chairman said the political parties will hold primaries from Wednesday, January 3 to Saturday, February 24 to choose their candidates for the election.

He said political parties must submit their candidate lists by Tuesday, February 27.

Wangdai also said that the sale of nomination forms will begin on Wednesday, February 28th and end on Monday, March 11th, and the screening of candidates will take place from Wednesday, March 13th to Friday, March 15th.

He said that based on the calendar, the campaign would start on Wednesday, April 3 and end on Friday, August 30.

In his speech, State IPAC Chairman Cletus Ogah commended the committee for making early preparations in accordance with the law.

He expressed confidence that the election management body will conduct free, fair and transparent elections based on preparations on the ground.

He pledged IPAC's support to the committee for the successful conduct of the elections.
