Nasarawa: Gunmen kill four people in robbery attack as residents lament poor security

The wave of criminal activities in Nasarawa State is on the rise as at least four persons were killed in Kalu State Council on Tuesday night.

The four people were killed when a group of gunmen suspected to be rubber bandits attacked a popular supermarket in Oneman Village around 8pm on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters at the scene of the incident, Adam Jacob, a resident, lamented the increased activities of criminals causing insecurity across the state.

“Life in the state is no longer safe as criminals are active everywhere and at all times. We are concerned that the state has become a haven for kidnapping, banditry and all kinds of terrorist activities. We are living like we don't have security personnel anymore,'' Jacob said.

He called on the state government to strengthen security arrangements in the state to ensure the safety of lives and property in Nasarawa state.

Another resident, Rafia, a lecturer at Federal University, who requested anonymity, lamented that she lives in constant fear as the level of kidnappings within the facility continues unabated.

“Often these kidnappings happen to staff but go unreported. Something needs to be done quickly. Some of my colleagues have quit their jobs because their lives at work are no longer safe. Some people are looking elsewhere.”

Confirming the attack, the Nasarawa State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Ranham Nansell, told our correspondent that the insurgents invaded the dinner market at 8.45pm and shot dead four people.

“We would like to confirm that on January 2, 2024, at about 8:45 a.m., some hoodlums numbering around four attacked Wiz Supermarket in Adei Kalu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, killing four customers. That's true.''

The PPRO said the thugs opened fire on the customers, resulting in four people recovering and being taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead by doctors and their members were admitted to Maraba Medical Center.
