NAFDAC seizes drugs worth 30 million naira, arrests 5 people in Abuja

An enforcement team of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) yesterday seized schedule 1 narcotics and other unregistered drugs worth N30 million from a pharmaceutical wholesale store in Ouse 2, Ouse district of the Federal Capital Territory. (FCT). The team also raided another store of the same owner in Lokogoma district.

Two pharmacy staff were arrested during a crackdown exercise carried out in collaboration with heavily armed men from the Nigeria Police Force.

Schedule 1 drugs are controlled substances or other substances that have a high potential for abuse.

The team also raided a popular day-day market on the outskirts of the FCT, arresting three drug peddlers and seizing various unregistered drugs and herbal products harmful to citizens.

The NAFDAC enforcement team, led by Northern Zone Investigation and Enforcement Deputy Director-General Pharmacy Director Andrew Tamanuwa, told reporters that the agency had received reliable information regarding Schedule 1 narcotics being sold in pharmacies.

He said that according to the Nigerian Constitution, only the federal government has the right to import Schedule 1 drugs such as morphine, codeine and meperidine, and that all other medical institutions should attend the Federal Medical School, which is under the federal government. He added that it has become. The Department of Health purchases Schedule 1 narcotics for patient use.
