NAFDAC raises alarm over fake injection in circulation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians, especially health providers, to mass injection of fake Merone 1g which are on the move.

In public memory released, the director general of the agency, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the Marketing License Holder (MAH), Pfizer reported the incident, as received through the patient notification platform, about the suspected purchase of Merone 1g injection. She reported that Pfizer said that the contents of the vial had not dissolved when they were put back into use, and that visual inspection was still observed.

It was also reported that the crimp code did not match in the production documents for the 2A21F11 and the semi-finished batch used for the 4A21I17. Adeyeye added that the production process did not meet Pfizer’s specifications.

“Platalla’s label compares favorably to the generic version of the purported version. Merone (Meropen trihydrate injection) antibiotics treat skin and abdominal (stomach area) infections from bacteria and meningitis (infection of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord) in adults and children 3 months of age and older. Administration of counterfeit products will put patients at risk as quality and safety are not guaranteed,” Adeyeye said.

The NAFDAC boss added that health providers and patients have been advised to obtain all medical supplies from authorized or licensed suppliers. According to her, the authenticity and physical condition of the products must be carefully checked before purchase and administration.

Adeyeye urged importers, manufacturers and sellers to put police within the supply chain and desist from illegal importation, distribution and sale of fake injection Merone 1g and other substandard medicines.

She reminded that anyone in possession of a counterfeit product should stop using it and submit it to the nearest NAFDAC office.
