A mysterious tunnel under construction near a main prison south of Paris was discovered during routine electrical work but did not appear to be part of an elaborate escape plan, police and city officials said Wednesday. It was announced on .

Tuesday's discovery was made by an engineer from Enedis, the company that manages France's electricity grid, who said he was working “in an electrical connection well” about 450 meters from La Santé prison. This was revealed by a police official.

A “bag of debris and a bed” were found at the scene.

Guillaume Durand, a city official in the French capital's 14th arrondissement, where the prison is located, said he suspected an elaborate escape plan had been hatched.

“It's a four-meter tunnel in a cul-de-sac on Rue Santé, but it's more than 500 meters from the prison,” he said.

“Police believe that this was rather intended to facilitate arrival into the catacombs and is therefore the work of cataphiles,” he said, referring to secret catacomb explorers.

He said authorities had sent technicians to the scene to fill the holes.

The Catacombs of Paris, a huge underground ossuary, is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions, attracting around 500,000 visitors a year.
