The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, has directed the Inspector General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Khalil Nababa, to investigate allegations that prison staff colluded with inmates to finance terrorist activities.
Tunji Ojo made this statement while appearing in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, following the accusations made by the Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Chris Musa.
“Problems in correctional facilities When we were interviewing some of the arrested Boko Haram men in the Northeast, they told us how they could plan operations on the ground from prison. They handed over the funds.
“They’re using some of the wardens there. I’m not saying they’re all corrupt. They’re using their own accounts, and the people using those accounts are There is a 50/50 arrangement to split the accounts. Those are the challenges,” Moosa said.
In response, Tunji Ojo on Thursday condemned the actions by the staff in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Alao Babatunde.
He vowed that all those deemed competent would be enrolled.
“The Minister called for a speedy investigation into the matter, noting that any staff member who commits or is complicit in sabotaging the security of Nigeria’s correctional institutions and, by extension, the country, will face the full wrath of the law. ”
“The Minister also wishes to inform the public that efforts are underway to reform correctional services in line with international standards so that prisoners are truly rehabilitated in line with President Bola Tinubu’s New Hope Agenda. That’s what I think.
He said the days of consultation but no action are over, and the current government will not tolerate violations by any official.
He added that they have national interests to protect and that comes before anyone else’s interests.
