The only survivor of the Brazilian team that lifted the 1958 World Cup trophy, Mario Zagallo, has died at the age of 92.

His death was confirmed by the president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodrigues.

In a statement released on Saturday, December 6, Rodrigues described Zagallo “as one of the greatest legends” of the sport.

“We offer solidarity to his family and fans at this time of mourning for the departure of this great hero of our football,” said Rodrigues.

Zagallo won five state championships in Rio de Janeiro with Flamengo and Botafogo. He only debuted for Brazil at the age of 26, just before the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, but became an integral member of the national team, earning 37 caps.

Zagallo has appeared in the World Cup final a record five times, winning four, as a player and then as a coach with Brazil.

He is also the first man to become world champion as a player and coach
