Man dies after falling into 40-metre hole he dug in his kitchen after dreaming gold was buried there

A man died after falling into a 40-metre hole he dug under his kitchen floor while trying to find gold he believed was buried there.

João Pimenta da Silva, a 71-year-old Brazilian, fell into the hole after losing his balance.

The 71-year-old's neighbors said he became obsessed with his belief that there was gold buried beneath his property in the Ipatinga region of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, after dreaming he was in possession of a fortune.

Neighbor Arnaldo told local media that João had been digging the hole for more than a year and had hired people to carry out the excavation work.

He said: “He started out paying 70 reais (£11.30) a day when the hole was still shallow, but the deeper he went, the more the costs rose.

“He ended up paying around £80 to whoever went into the hole and helped remove the earth.

“He had hit a large rock that looked difficult to remove and there were rumors that he was talking about trying to get dynamite.”

The neighbor said that João claimed to have been told by a “spirit” in a dream that there was gold under the rock beneath his kitchen floor and tried to warn him of the dangers of his mission, but was ignored.

The tragedy that led to the man's death occurred on January 5th. Firefighters confirmed that they received a call around 1:30 pm that day to a house in a neighborhood called Betânia, after the owner suffered a fall of approximately 40 meters, but was unable to do anything to save his life.

Photos of the hole, which was about 35 centimeters in diameter and descended the equivalent of about 12 floors, were published in the Brazilian press.

Local reports say the victim slipped and fell to his death from a wooden platform near the top of the hole while trying to climb out after water and mud removal work.

A friend he worked with was unable to save him.

His body was removed by emergency services. It turned out he suffered head injuries and broken legs, as well as other fractures.
