The Senate has charged Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike to investigate the implementation of a $500 million contract to install closed circuit television, CCTV and cameras in the FCT.
The resolution was adopted following the adoption of a motion by Senator Ned Nwoko in plenary session on Wednesday on the tragedy of the Galadimawa kidnapping.
Nwoko expressed concern over the recent kidnapping incident involving a Senior Legislative Assistant, Chris Agidi, in Galadimawa District of the FCT.
He said a harrowing incident occurred two weeks ago in Galadimawa where 19 people were forcibly taken from their homes.
Mr Nwoke said that upon receiving the sad news, he informed the Commissioner of Police, who swiftly activated the OC Anti-Kidnapping Team to secure the release of those abducted.
He lamented that a distressing update from reliable police sources confirmed that 12 of the 19 abducted people have been killed and seven remain in the custody of their kidnappers.
“Their lines remain inactive, hampering direct communication and negotiation efforts,” the lawmaker said.
“Despite the difficulties in reaching the kidnappers, security forces say efforts are still focused on securing the remaining captives from a forested area approximately 100 kilometers away. ”
“As we await further updates from authorities, we continue to steadfastly pursue a swift and safe resolution to this tragic situation.”
In its resolution, the Senate called for a joint operation involving the army, police and DSS to intensify efforts to rescue kidnap victims.
Lawmakers also directed Wike to review the installation of CCTV contracts and hold contractors accountable.
The Senate also called on the Inspector General of Police to intensify surveillance patrols in Abuja to prevent kidnappings.
The Senate also called on the IGP to conduct a thorough investigation into the kidnapping incident in Abuja.
It also mandated the Committee on Security to encourage security agencies to implement robust security measures and consider installing surveillance cameras within specific areas of the FCT and other parts of the country.
