Katsina reviews free education policy and teacher recruitment process
The Katsina State Government has come up with plans to review its free education policy and update the teacher recruitment process in the state.
The Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, Hadiza Yar’Adua, made this known on Friday during her maiden press conference at the Katsina State Secretariat.
Mr Yar’Adua in his address said this is one of Katsina State’s goals by 2024 to improve education in line with the current situation in the North-Western state.
Part of the plan, she said, is to ensure that teacher service boards are able to fulfill their statutory functions of recruiting and training teachers.
Yar’Adua maintained that the ministry also planned for the basic and secondary education sector to provide efficient learning that would contribute to the socio-economic growth and development of Katsina State.
According to the Secretary, other goals set by the ministry include establishing a basic and secondary education sector with an improved curriculum that imparts basic skills in traditional subjects.
“To enhance the coverage and quality of basic and secondary education,” he added.
“Identifying clear structures to improve teacher performance with appropriate incentives and disciplinary measures through robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
“We will provide an effective and efficient framework and strategy to support His Excellency in the design and establishment of three model schools to accommodate the best candidates in the state.
“To maximize partner support from AGILE, TESS and other partner projects to develop and positively impact basic and secondary education in the state,” she said.
Mr. Yar’Adua disclosed at the meeting that the ministry is developing an action plan that includes short, medium and long term plans aimed at improving the coverage and quality of basic and secondary education in the state.
She further said that the Katsina Ministry of Education also plans to ensure the inclusion of rural areas in its noble endeavour.
The Kaduna State Commissioner for Education said the ministry plans to not only address security issues in high-risk areas but also the welfare of teachers.
