Kaduna chief says he will castrate rapists
The Kaduna State Government has reiterated its readiness to carry out castration on male rapists and bilateral salpingectomy on females.
Surgical castration often includes eradicating the testicles, whereas bilateral salpingectomy includes eradicating a girl’s fallopian tubes. Both processes lead to sterile situations.
The Secretary of Welfare and Social Development, Ravi Salisu, made this identified at a gender-based stakeholder assembly in Kaduna.
The summit was hosted by her ministry in collaboration with the Center for Integrated Health Programs (CIHP).
Mr Salisu mentioned the punitive measure was included within the Kaduna State Government Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPPL) of 2018.
She mentioned: “This regulation was enacted after an extended advocacy, lobbying and consciousness course of by civil society organizations within the state in collaboration with related authorities companies.
“Since the passing of VAPPL in December 2018, there has been a notable increase in the number of reported cases of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Kaduna. This is due to increased awareness of VAWG and the availability of legislation. This may be the cause.”
He mentioned incidents of gender-based violence (GBV) have been on the rise within the state.
“According to the National GBV Data Situation Room and the Nigeria GBV Prevention and Response Dashboard, 832 cases have been reported so far in 2023,” Salisu mentioned.
She mentioned the 16 days from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence towards Women) to December 10 are referred to as the “Days of Action Against Gender-Based Violence”.
“This is the time to take motion to finish violence towards ladies and women all over the world. 25 November has been designated as Orange Day by the UNiTE Campaign to End Violence Against Women. It symbolizes a vivid future with out violence.
“It also serves as a means of showing solidarity in eliminating all forms of violence. It is therefore used as the color of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women,” she added.
