JERUSALEM, Israel (AP) — After the largest drone and missile attack in history, Israel is considering how to respond to Iran's attack that fired more than 300 projectiles over the weekend.

The question is whether Israel will counterattack or whether its allies, particularly the US, will succeed in containing Israel's military response.

Firing drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles early Sunday, Iran's action brought to light a 45-year shadow war with Israel.

Some described the 99 percent interception rate of these projectiles as a spectacular military achievement.

The missile defense shield erected by Israel and its allies, including the United States, Britain, France, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, repelled the largest attack of its kind ever carried out in the skies.

Stunning videos showed several rockets being fired over the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

Israel's war cabinet met on Sunday to decide on the response. Benny Gantz said Israel would act when the time was right, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant urged an international coalition against Iran.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for “maximum restraint,” and the U.N. Security Council sent the same message.

Iran said the matter was “closed” and warned Israel of retaliation.

After the attack, President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a telephone conversation. Biden reportedly told Netanyahu: “You won. Take a victory.” He advised Israel not to take revenge. Instead, he promised a diplomatic offensive with the G-7 countries.

According to leaked reports from the phone call, the US told Israel that it would not take part in any attack against Iran.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said: “The president has been very clear. We do not seek war with Iran. We are not seeking escalation here. We will continue to help Israel defend itself.”

Still, some U.S. lawmakers say the U.S. should support an Israeli retaliation.

Representative Mike McCaul (R-Texas) speaks on CBS faces the nation, stated: “I think an appropriate response is needed – not only where they were launched, but also at the facilities where the drones and missiles were built.”

Senator John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) stated on Fox News, “We must stand with Israel. Israel is not at war with Hamas, Hezbollah, or Yemen. These are all proxies of Iran. They are the prostitutes, the pimp is Iran. Israel is at war with Iran. Iran hates Americans, Iran hates Jews. Iran wants to kill Americans and Jews.

Reuters reported that Turkey acted as an intermediary between Iran and the US. Iran had informed Turkey in advance of its planned operation, adding that Washington had told Tehran that any measures it took must be “within certain limits.”

Former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon said CBN News He believes that great defense is not enough.

“We also need to demonstrate our offensive capabilities to create deterrence against Iran in the region,” Danon emphasized. “They have attacked a sovereign country with 300 rockets, missiles and drones and we cannot stand idly by.” He added: “My position is that we have to hit them hard. Teach them a lesson that they won’t do it again.”

Reserve Brigadier General Amir Avivi believes that without offensive military action, Israel will “normalize” the Iranian attack.

While Israelis and allied partners praise air defense, some also point to the power of prayer in protecting Israel.

“I would like to thank everyone who is praying for us and standing by us. “I think what we saw last night was that the hand of God is also protecting Israel,” Ambassador Danon said.
