Israel must relinquish control of Gaza after war with Hamas – German Foreign Minister Birbock

German Foreign Minister Annalena Verbock has suggested that Israel should relinquish control of the Gaza Strip after its war with Hamas.

He said the Palestinian people should be free from terrorism, self-determined, and lead and govern freely elected governments, including those in the West Bank.

Mr. Barbock said the security architecture, including infrastructure building, reform of the Palestinian Authority, economic reconstruction, and security for both Palestine and Israel, will ensure that a two-state solution remains within reach. He emphasized that it would be helpful.

She added that only a two-state solution can bring lasting peace and security to the Israeli people.

Asked who should be in charge after the war, Barbock said on Friday, “Palestinians should be free from Hamas, free from terrorism, free from Hamas, free from terrorism, self-determined, and free from all Palestinians, including Palestinians,” NAN reported. “We have a government freely chosen by the Palestinian people.” He should be in charge in the West Bank.

“This will not happen overnight, but we must not lose sight of the political horizon, especially now during a time of war,” she said.

Barbock's comments were inspired by Israel's recent announcement to declare approximately 800 hectares of the West Bank as Israeli state land.

He said protection during the transition period until the two states can coexist peacefully would not be possible without international security.

Barbock said Arab countries must be involved and Israel's close friends, including Germany, must be concerned about the political horizon.

Finally, he said Israel should be confident that there will be no future terrorist threat from Palestine and that Palestinians can live in safety and dignity in their own land.
