Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement for at least four days in the Gaza Strip.
The Qatar-brokered agreement aims to facilitate the delivery of aid to Gaza and the release of hostages.
Recall that Hamas took around 240 hostages during an attack on a town in southern Israel on October 7, and so far only four have been freed.
The ceasefire, the first in the nearly seven-week conflict, is scheduled to begin Thursday morning, but the official start time had not yet been announced as of early Wednesday afternoon.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that as part of the deal, at least 50 hostages, including women and children, would be released at a rate of at least 10 per day over four days.
The Israeli government statement added that the ceasefire could be extended on the condition that additional hostages continue to be released.
“The Israeli government is committed to bringing all hostages home. Tonight, we approved the proposed agreement as a first step to achieving this goal,” a government statement said.
