INEC issues notice for Surulere by-election in Lagos

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State has released the notification for the Surulere Federal Constituency 1 by-election as required by law.

INEC Public Relations Officer in Lagos State, Adenike Oriowo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday that the notice was posted for public inspection at the commission’s headquarters in Sabo-Yaba on Thursday.

“This notice was also posted at the Surulere Local Government Area Office of the Commission.

“Section 28(3) of the Elections Act 2022 provides that this must be done at least 14 days before the election,” Oliowo added.

He said INEC had begun implementing activities and schedules for the elections.

The spokesperson added that INEC’s preparations were at their best to ensure compliance with laws and guidelines related to the poll.

According to her, the commission will not fail to conduct a credible by-election in the constituency.

Recall that INEC has fixed February 3, 2024 as the date for holding re-elections and by-elections in nine states, including Surulere Federal Constituency in Lagos State.

According to the poll calendar, the party primaries, including the resolution of any disputes that may arise from the primaries, will be held from January 5th to January 9th.

Election campaigns by political parties will begin on January 18th and end on February 1st.

Surulere's seat became vacant following the resignation of his predecessor, House of Representatives member Femi Gbajabiamila, but he was appointed chief of staff by President Bola Tinubu after his victory.
