Workers of the Imo State Civil Service on Tuesday, November 21, protested the attack on their colleague, Unegbu Chimaobi, who was allegedly assaulted while performing his office duties by Precious Izuogu, son of Lady Rosemary Izuogu, the President of the Local Government Services Commission.
The victim reportedly worked under the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, LGSC, Mrs. Rosemary Izuogu. Her son, Mr. Precious Izuogu, who is reportedly not on the commission, spends much of his time in the office and has been accused of intimidating commission officials.
The LGSC Chairperson and her son allegedly hired thugs who assaulted the Public Relations Officer, PRO, of the Commission, Mr. Micheal Chimaobi Unegbu, on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at the secretariat in Owerri. This happened after Precious allegedly accused him of insulting her mother.
The attack resulted in him being admitted to a hospital.
Protesting the attack on Tuesday, November 21, workers of the Imo State Civil Service, who were mostly information officers, passed through the Office of the Local Government Commission to the office of the Head of Service at the state secretariat in Owerri with posters with different inscriptions, such as “Enough is enough”, “Public employees are not slaves”, “We demand justice”, etc.
They denounced what they alleged was the “frequent beating” of public servants by the same Precious Izuogu.
Speaking on behalf of others, Mrs. Bibian Okere pleaded with the Head of Service, Barr. Raymond Ucheoma, to investigate the matter and ensure that Chimaobi Unegbu gets justice.
In his response, Barr. Raymond Ucheoma thanked the workers and informed the aggrieved officers of the various measures taken to improve the situation, stating that Unegbu was taken to hospital for treatment and came to report to him.
He further reminded them of the importance of their position to the government and that their interests and well-being would not be taken for granted.
