In a bid to restore political stability in Ondo State, President Bola Tinubu late Friday intervened in a months-long crisis between factions loyal to Executive Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and Deputy Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa.
This was followed by a meeting between the President and the Deputy Governor, representatives of Governor Akeredolu, federal and state legislators in the state, officials of the state branch of the All Progressives Congress, and other stakeholders in Ondo at the state assembly meeting in Abuja. Marathon negotiations took place in the Capitol.
The President advised all opponents to lay down the ax and embrace peace, and elicited promises to this effect.
This is despite the retention of leadership of the State House of Assembly and Ondo State APC chapter, with Governor Akeredolu remaining the State Executive Chief and Ayedatiwa the Deputy Governor, while members of the State Executive Council are discharging their respective duties. “We need to respect each other in terms of the offices we work in and the differences in age. That means respecting each other.
“And I want to assure the party establishment that we will work together because the party is the supreme being. We will always salute you,” the Ondo State Deputy Governor vowed. .
Reading the details of the resolution, the Chairman of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Oladiji Olamide, said, “Our resolution is that we embrace peace. Secondly, as far as the leadership of the House of Assembly is concerned, there will be no more dissolution of the Cabinet and the Deputy Governor will maintain the status quo.
“We will maintain the status quo as far as state party leadership is concerned and we will maintain the status quo as far as state legislative leadership is concerned. Thank you, Mr. President.”
Meanwhile, the Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu, said: “Our father, the President, has gone out of his way to settle our grudges in Ondo State. We stand for you, sir. We will not let you down. We have taken every word you have said. And we will go home as one united family under the party, APC.
In his address, the Ondo State APC Chairman, Mr. Ade Adetimehin, expressed happiness at the outcome of late Friday night deliberations and assured that the party would remain a watchdog to ensure that the new commitments are complied with.
“Today is the happiest moment for me. And I know that sanity has returned to Ondo State. Therefore, on behalf of the teeming supporters of our party in the state, our leaders Thank you, Mr. President.
“PDP has collapsed in the state. Practically every day they leave camp. The only problem we have is the problem you solved for us today. And that problem has been permanently resolved,” Adetimehin said.
