San Francisco 49ers star quarterback Brock Purdy and his teammates prepare to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII (58) on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

But this week, in addition to football and Sunday's big game, Purdy talked about his faith.

During a press conference, a Sports Spectrum reporter asked the San Francisco quarterback about his faith in Jesus and what Bible verses he had read that may have helped him through the season.

“Yes, for me this year it was Psalm 23,” Purdy replied as he paraphrased the verse. “The lord is my shepherd. I have what I need. He leaves me in green pastures. He leads me to still waters.”

“But for me, there’s a lot that goes into this game and this sport,” he continued. “And you know you can… it's easy to get caught up in, you know, wanting and feeling loved, you know, by your teammates and everyone else, of course, but like by the world .”

“And so my point in this passage is that I already have what I need from the Good Shepherd in Jesus. So I've been studying Psalm 23 all this time and then I come back to it. That's actually how I start every day. I’ll just read Psalm 23 to myself before I start,” Purdy said. “Start with some solitude and then I’ll go about my day.”

Purdy, 24, is the third-youngest quarterback to ever start a Super Bowl. He can make a remarkable rise from the last pick of the 2022 draft to champion in less than two years. And now he's leading San Francisco to its eighth Super Bowl appearance – its second-most ever – and seeking a record-tying sixth championship.

The Sports Spectrum reporter followed up on his question and said he spoke with his father (Shawn Purdy), who told him he was “praying his heart out” while watching his son play.

“Do you pray when you play during a game?” the reporter asked.

The 49ers QB responded with a smile and said, “Yeah, yeah, I do. You know, it's not about, 'Can we, God, can we win here? Can we do something great here?'” It's more about asking to have that peace, that steadfastness in all the chaos. That's it really. And sinking it back in like, “Holy Spirit, you know, take over and lead me here in this moment and allow me to do it.” Think clearly. Of course, allow me to go through my reading and, like I said, just have a balanced state of mind that I get from the Holy Spirit.”

As CBN News reported, it seemed almost impossible for San Francisco to win the NFC Championship at the start of halftime on Jan. 28 as they were down 17 points to the Detroit Lions.

But Purdy later revealed that it was his faith in God that gave him the confidence that gave his team the boost it needed and ultimately sent them to the Super Bowl.

“If I give it up 17 points at halftime, I'll honestly just think, 'All right, God, you got me here, and whether I win or lose, I'm going to glorify You.' That’s my peace, the joy, the steadfastness – that’s where I get it from,” Purdy said.

Although the 49ers trailed 24-7 at halftime, they scored 27 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters. Purdy finished the game with one touchdown and 267 passing yards, Sports Spectrum reported.

After the greatest comeback in NFC Championship game history, the 24-year-old said: “First of all, glory to God. He gave us this opportunity.”

During the postgame press conference, Purdy was asked how his personal journey helped the team win in the second half. And he quickly gave God the glory.

“Honestly, I think it’s just a testimony to God and where He’s led me in life,” Purdy said. “I was never the biggest, the fastest, the strongest or anything like that. I feel like I've always had to fight for what I get and work for what I get. But God always gave me a chance, whether that was in high school, college and then of course in the NFL. When you get drafted last, people overlook you and all those things, and then all you need is an opportunity and watch and see what He does. I say I believe and trust him and he got me to where I am now,” he shared.

Despite all the attention and fame football has brought him this season, his identity remains anchored in Christ.

“My identity can’t be in football, it can’t be in the things of this world,” he told Sports Spectrum. “It must be in Him.”
