Amadi Umeh showed why he is currently the best home-based player in the country by defeating hard-fought Rilwan Akanbi to win the 3rd Quadri Aruna Open Table Tennis Championship over the weekend.

In the women's category, Aminat Fashola defeated Sukrat Airabegan to win the title at the competition in Lagos.
The five-day tournament was organized by Aruna Sports and Academy in collaboration with Eco Club and Olusoga Odunayo Adesanya Foundation, and saw over 300 athletes from across the country compete for a prize of N5 million.

In the final held at Eko Club, Surulere, Lagos, Ume showed class against fan favorite Akanbi to be crowned the new men's singles champion. It had all the elements of a grand festival.

Despite not receiving enough support from fans in Lagos, Ume defeated 2022 champion Muiz Adegoke in the semi-finals, setting up a final match against homeboy Akanbi.

Ahead of the epic final between Ume and Akanbi, Fashola's change in tactics against the defensive Ayerabegan was all it took to win the women's singles title 4-2 and become the new champion. Ta. Her opponent was 2022 champion Bose Odusanya in the semi-finals. .

In the men's singles final, Ume and Akanbi created one of the greatest moments of the tournament, entertaining fans and dignitaries who watched an enthusiastic finale.

In his speech after the final match, Ume said the victory was the result of determination and perseverance amid overwhelming support from his opponents.
“I thank God that I won, but everything was against me so it wasn't easy especially for the fans. I'm happy and I hope to play in the next competition before the end of the year. ” he said.

Also commenting on the event, tournament coordinator Ganiat Aruna said the huge support from well-meaning Nigerians and overwhelming participation of athletes will lead to improvements in future tournaments.
