Heroine mother has leg ripped off by shark and bleeds to death while saving 5-year-old daughter

A young mother swimming off the Pacific coast of Mexico was killed while saving her 5-year-old daughter from a shark, which bit off the woman's leg, leaving her to bleed on the beach.

A harrowing video was shared on social media showing the shark attack victim sprawled on the sand in the town of Melaque on Saturday, December 2, after being transported from the Pacific Ocean to safety by rescuers.

“She lost her leg,” viewers could be heard saying in the video.

The woman was identified locally as Maria Fernandez Martinez Jimenez, 26, a former marine biology student at the University of Guadalajara, who lived in the region, in the western state of Jalisco.

Jiménez was in the ocean with his daughter when he apparently noticed the presence of a shark in the water and rushed to place the girl on a floating platform located 75 feet offshore, said Rafael Araiza, head of the local civil defense office.

The mother had just managed to get her 5-year-old son out of danger when the shark latched its jaws onto her leg, near her hip.

Despite the rescue team's quick response, Jimenez died from blood loss from the massive wound, Ariaza confirmed. Her daughter escaped unharmed.

The horrific incident occurred during a swimming race nearby, Civil Protection officials in the municipality of Cihuatlan said.

“Our employees were carrying out support activities during a swimming event in the bay when they received reports of a person who was having trouble getting out of the sea,” the statement said. “When they arrived in the area, they discovered a lifeless woman, with one of her legs amputated, apparently after a shark attack.”

Authorities closed the beaches of Melaque and the nearby town of Barra de Navidad to swimming as a precaution.
