Grandma miraculously survives as the ceiling collapses at night and buries her in rubble

A grandmother is lucky to be alive after the roof of her home collapsed on her while she was fast asleep.

The 90-year-old man was trapped under rubble at around 5:30am yesterday, November 27, after the collapse in St Albans, which is northwest of Melbourne, Australia.

The woman’s granddaughter, who identified herself only as Teresa, said her mother heard the drama and asked for help, reports 9News.

She said: “Mom heard a bang. She said to come: ‘The roof collapsed and grandma was trapped inside.’ Grandma was screaming, saying, ‘Help me, help me.’”

When she arrived at the scene, Teresa and her mother were unable to force the bedroom door and called the emergency services. When the fire department arrived, rescuers thanked him with the help of a ladder and pliers.

The elderly woman was found under the rubble, close to the door. Her rescuers were surprised to discover that she was largely unharmed, with her only injury apparently being pain in her neck caused by falling pieces of plaster.

The cause of the roof collapse has not yet been formally identified, but Teresa said they noticed a crack appearing in recent days – although they did not see any signs of water ingress.

“We didn’t see any watermarks, nothing like that. The only thing was a crack in the corner, so we called the insurance company yesterday,” she said.
