A Ghanaian Member of Parliament, Isaac Adongo, has apologized to Manchester United defender Harry Maguire for comparing him to the country’s Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia.

In 2022, Adongo criticized the vice president for the country’s poor economic performance. He also compared the vice president to Maguire because both did not contribute much to their teams.

During a budget debate in parliament on Tuesday, November 21, Adongo apologized to Maguire, saying the England defender has now become a “transformational football player”, adding that the vice-president now “walks into the IMF with a cup in hand.”

Adongo said: “Mr. President, I now apologize to Harry Maguire. Today, Harry Maguire has turned the corner and is a transformational footballer.

“(Harry Maguire) is now a key player for Manchester, but as for our Maguire (Mr Bawumia), he is now wandering around the IMF with a cup in his hand,” the MP added.

BBC Africa reports that Ghana is currently experiencing its worst economic crisis in a generation. Last year, the inflation rate reached an all-time high of 54 percent and is still above 35 percent.
