Funke Akindele's 'A Tribe Called Judah' becomes first Nollywood film to hit N1 billion

Director Funke Akindele's new film A Tribe Called Judah has become the first Nollywood film to gross over 1 billion Norwegian at the box office.

“A Tribe Called Judah” grossed NOK 1 billion in its first three weeks of release.

Announcing the historic feat in a statement on Thursday, Filmhouse Group CEO Kane Okwosa said the world was witnessing a golden age of Nigerian cinema.

“Akindele’s film not only captivated audiences, but also proved that Nigerian cinema is resilient in the face of global streaming giants like Netflix and Prime Video,” the statement added.

A Tribe Called Judah was released in cinemas on December 15, 2023, and became the first Nollywood film to gross over 113 million Norwegian in its opening weekend.

DAILY POST recalls that director Funke’s “The Battle of Buka Street” grossed 650 million Naira at the box office in 2022.
