Former Nigeria international Ekpo says Super Eagles need home-based players instead of sacking Peseiro

Former Nigeria international Friday Ekpo said on Tuesday that the sacking of Super Eagles head coach Jose Peceiro was not as important as adding fresh homegrown or foreign experts in key departments of the team. .

Ekpo said this in an interview with NAN in Lagos, against the backdrop of the Super Eagles’ lackluster performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Recall that the Super Eagles drew 1-1 in Uyo in matchday one against Lesotho, who have never qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

A few days later, Peseiro’s side lost to a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Rwanda, picking up just two points from their first two games.

Peseiro has come under heavy criticism after leading the Super Eagles to two disappointing results in November.

But Ekpo has now appealed to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) not to heed calls by football enthusiasts for the Portuguese player to be sacked.

“I’m not calling for Jose’s head like most people. It would be counterproductive to sack him at this point. These results could be reversed in subsequent games.

“My only concern is that we shouldn’t have only foreign players in the team because it’s difficult to choose the team that will play.

“No foreign-based player wants to leave the club just to sit on the bench. We have done it in the past and it worked well. We can do it again,” Ekpo said.
