FG spends $1.1 billion to rehabilitate six ports

The Federal Government on Monday revealed that it will spend a total of $1.1 billion to rebuild six ports across Nigeria.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) disclosed this in a statement on the X, saying it will reduce long transit times for ships and improve port efficiency.

“To improve the efficiency of existing ports, the Federal Government, through @nigerianports, has committed to 11% to completely rehabilitate the dilapidated port infrastructure of Tin Can Port, Apapa Port, Rivers Port, Delta Port, Calabar Port and Onne Port. billions of dollars in investment,” the statement said.

The NPA said in a statement that some of these ports were built a century ago and have not been rebuilt since then.

Aging quays prevent terminal operators from deploying modern cargo handling equipment such as ship-to-shore cranes.

The agency says this often results in longer vessel turning times.

The renovation includes the reconstruction of 2,563 meters of quay walls and pavements, including other works at the Tin Can Island Port Complex (TCIPC) and the old gravity walls (berths 4 to 14) at the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa Quays). ) includes the reconstruction of 2,020 meters of quayside to replace. ).

Other projects include the rehabilitation of the collapsed 8.6km Escravos breakwater in Warri, Delta State, the reconstruction of the 200m quay at Onne Port, FLT 2, and the reconstruction of the 80m sheet pile wall structure at Warri Old Port (Terminal C). .

It also includes the reconstruction of the 280-meter quay structure at Warri Old Port (Terminal A), the renovation of Calabar Shipyard at Calabar Shipyard, the reconstruction of Makibah Jetty at Calabar Port Pier, and the reconstruction of Mirero Pier at Calabar Port Jetty.

Once this is completed, the existing port will be able to operate at full capacity and with improved efficiency, the NPA said.

This will reduce vessel TAT and cargo dwell time, it added.
