The Federal Government has announced that it will soon begin evacuation procedures for Nigerians who have taken refuge in neighboring Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republic.
Thousands of Nigerians affected by the Boko Haram insurgency had sought refuge in neighboring countries at the peak of the crisis.
The Federal Commissioner for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Alhaji Ahmed Tijani, disclosed the plan on Thursday after meeting with Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State in Maiduguri.
Mr Tijani said the government had also agreed to close the remaining Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Maiduguri and return the displaced to their ancestral homelands in the shortest possible time.
“We discussed the evacuation of refugees from Cameroon, Niger and Chad. It was agreed to hold a tripartite meeting.
“The committee will consider and decide on the processes and procedures to be applied when evacuating the population.
“Registration of refugees for voluntary evacuation is underway in cooperation with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR),” Tijani said.
He commended the Borno State government for its commitment to the welfare of the people and assured the committee of its constant support.
