FG emphasizes urgency for cooperation to fight rights violations | Headline News
The Federal Government reiterated the urgent need for cooperation among stakeholders to curb human rights violations in the country.
The Solicitor General of the Federation (SGF) and Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Justice, Beatrice Jedi Agba, made the accusation at the first Universities Human Rights Summit held in Abuja on Monday.
The project, named 'Guardians of Dignity', was organized by Stirling Law Center (SLC) and supported by the Federal Ministry of Justice. National Human Rights Commission (NHRC); United Nations (UN) and Committee Against Torture (CAT).
While stressing the urgent need for collective responsibility in promoting human rights in Nigeria, the SGF said that the Anti-Torture Act, 2017 is a beacon of hope and a great legislative instrument that will empower the fight against torture and its insidious presence in society. Jedi Agba said: “The fight against torture is not a solitary effort. It is a collective march towards justice. As guardians and protectors of human rights, we strive for a world where every individual is treated with respect, dignity and compassion. Let us stand united and resolute in this effort.”
In his remarks, Tony Ojukwu, Executive Director of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) (SAN), said the future of human rights rests with the youth and called on them to become human rights defenders.
Mr Ojukwu said: “This summit is more than just a gathering. It is a call to action. Today, we challenge the brightest minds in this room to become a new generation of human rights defenders. The future of human rights advocacy is in your hands. It’s in your hands.”
According to Stirling Law Center Executive Director Deji Ajale, the summit aims to deepen knowledge about human rights among young people in the country.
The summit, which aims to raise young people's awareness of human rights issues, also includes other elements aimed at improving human rights issues.
