FEC approves 3.2 billion naira for baggage scanners at 5 airports, Keyamo reveals

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the sum of N3.2 billion to purchase baggage scanner equipment for five international airports in Nigeria.
This was confirmed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, while speaking on Arise TV on Tuesday.
Mr Keyamo said this was an effort to address the issue of multiple baggage checks being carried out by different security agencies at the country’s international airports.
“Since I’ve been in office, I’ve been inundated with complaints about the terrible experiences passengers have had at airports, where their luggage has to be physically searched. I’m sure you all know about it.” said Keyamo.
“This issue is so deeply ingrained in the minds of Nigerians that you see different agencies lining up. NDLEA says open your bag, Immigration says open your bag, Customs says open your bag. And the EFCC will tell you to open the bag and they will dip their hands into the bag.
“The TSA in the United States has a detector, and we thought we should do something where when you put your baggage through that machine, it would detect explosives and other things, and then the search would end.”
Mr Keyamo said this, FEC awarded the contract for the supply and installation of customized explosives and narcotics detection screening systems with remote and dual view for Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu International Airports. He said he had approved the conclusion.
