FCTA to review the capital’s security architecture
The Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) has announced that it has completed plans to review the security architecture of the federal capital, Abuja.
FCTA Director-General, Security Agency, Mr. Adam Gwali, said this at the year-end press conference in Abuja yesterday.
Gwali said plans to revive the G7 security initiative and expand the number of security informants to include artisans and farmers have also reached an advanced stage. He explained that the use of informants and vigilante groups to gather information and intelligence is part of community policing in the FCTA.
According to him, this will ensure the safety of the capital. He said that as part of security measures, the FCTA prohibits begging and hawking within its secretariat. He also said the FCTA has finalized plans to introduce an effective transportation system to address the threat of “one chance” (fraudulent) operators in the capital.
“We are working diligently behind the scenes to maintain security in the capital, including maintaining peace between herders and farmers. We are also working diligently to prevent vandalism to public facilities. We are working with institutions,” he said.
He said the FCTA had completed the installation of CCTV cameras around the secretariat in the first phase of the program, adding that the second phase would include installation in strategic areas of the city.
He said this would enable security agencies to monitor, arrest and prosecute criminals. He urged residents to be more aware of their safety and to report any suspicious incidents to their local police station.
Mr. Gwari also charged traditional leaders to abide by the code of conduct that guides traditional organizations and disclosed that a traditional leader had been arrested for his involvement in the kidnapping.
He said he had been stripped of his title as commissioner and handed over to prosecution. He decried the weak legal structure of the FCT, which negatively affects the sentencing and punishment of lawbreakers and criminals.
