FCTA doctors condemn 5% budget allocation for health sector in 2024
The Resident Doctors Association (ARD) of the Federal Capital Territory (FCTA) has admitted an error in the 5% budget allocation to the health sector in the 2024 budget.
ARD FCTA Chairman Olayinka Rahman said on Monday at a press conference announcing Health Week 2023 that there was a mistake in the allocation.
Rahman lamented the continued low remuneration and poor working conditions for doctors in the FCT and across hospitals in the country.
He said the N1.33 trillion budget allocated to the country's health sector would not be able to address the challenges, considering the rising prices of transport, food and services due to the removal of fuel subsidies.
According to him, Nigeria's health sector is in dire need of emergency.
“5% budget allocation is not enough to address inadequate remuneration, inadequate health facilities and other challenges. We cannot continue to use the same methods and expect different results.
“Many doctors in this country today are here out of patriotism. That is why most doctors are leaving the country in droves. In ARD, FCTA alone, more than 5 to 10 people are dying every day. I can tell you the doctor is on duty.”
In January 2023, the Resident Physicians Association said that according to a 2022 survey, nearly 2,000 doctors leave the country each year in search of greener pastures overseas, and that number may have jumped to more than 4,000. He announced that there are indications that there is.
