Former England striker Alan Shearer criticized Chelsea captain Reece James by name after Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United.

James was shown a second yellow in the 73rd minute for a foul on Anthony Gordon.

The right-back has started the Blues’ last three top-flight games since returning from a hamstring problem, but will now serve a one-match ban.

Speaking on BBC Radio, Shearer said: “Chelsea were terrible in the second half.

“They were put under pressure by Newcastle and they were beaten badly.

“Kieran Trippier played really well, Reece James didn’t. Anthony Gordon gave him a really tough time and he was frustrated.

“Gordon seems to have really enjoyed his time at Newcastle. James was a bit frustrated and got sent off.”
