EPL: Melson reveals to Pochettino names of 3 players who must start against Newcastle

EPL: Paul Merson advises Arsenal star to fight for place in Arteta's squad

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has advised Aaron Ramsdale to “fight for his place” at the club.

Ramsdale's future has been up in the air in recent weeks after Arsenal surprisingly acquired David Raya on loan from Premier League rivals Brentford.

Raya has secured the No. 1 spot in Mikel Arteta's side, with Ramsdale making just one Premier League appearance since the start of September.

As a result, it has been speculated that Ramsdale could leave the Gunners in the January transfer window to seek regular appearances at another club.

“He (Ramsdale) signed a contract. They brought in another goalkeeper, he is number one at the moment. He has to fight for his position, it's as simple as that.” Merson told Sky Sports.

“When you sign a contract for 100,000, 150,000 a week, you can't just say, 'Oh, I'm not part of the team.' I'm leaving tomorrow morning, so I'd like to play somewhere.”

“It's a scary position for a goalkeeper. It's very unusual to have two top-class goalkeepers like Arsenal have.

“But where will I go? I won't go to Liverpool or Manchester United. The only one I can see is Chelsea and I don't think Arsenal sold to Chelsea.

“So for me, I think he has to fight for his spot. The only positive thing I can say at the moment is that he's still young and will probably get better as he gets older. That means the only position is goalkeeper.”
