Enugu police arrest man with fake naira notes

The Enugu State Police Command has announced that its operatives have arrested Maduabuchi Okonkwo, 24, for allegedly possessing and dealing in fake Naira notes.

The command's spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said in a statement on Tuesday that operatives from Abakaliki Road Police Station arrested Mr Okonkwo on April 10 with the support of law-abiding members of the public.

He said a total of 40,000 Naira suspected to be counterfeit out of 1,000 counterfeit banknotes was recovered from the suspects.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect took a minibus from Newhaven Junction to Old IMT Bus Stop in Enugu and handed one of the counterfeit notes to the driver.

“However, the driver realized that the currency was fake and immediately raised the alarm, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed that he had paid a genuine N25,000 note to his associate in exchange for a fake N50,000 note worth N50,000,” he said.

Ndukwe further said that he confessed that he spent N10,000 of the counterfeit notes and recovered the remaining N40,000.
