Ekiti government obliges monarch to ensure citizens comply with environmental sanitation laws
The Ekiti State Government has appealed to traditional rulers to join the government in forcing their people to fully comply with monthly environmental hygiene training.
The state government said the princes’ efforts are related to the implementation of environmental laws and other strategically designed policies aimed at promoting the health of the population.
Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Monisado Afue, said this on Saturday at the Alajaka Palace, Oba Edward Jayola, Igbara-Odo Ekiti, while monitoring the monthly environmental sanitation situation in Ekiti South West Local Government Area.
According to a statement by his Media Assistant, Mr. Victor Ogunje, Mr. Afue especially said that a large number of traders had gathered at the Oja Oba Market in Igbara Odo Ekiti at about 8:30 a.m. when the environmental sanitation was in full progress. This made him frown.
The Deputy Governor said such acts are in accordance with the Ekiti State Environmental Health Act, which requires all citizens to maintain cleanliness between 8am and 10am on the last Saturday of every month, unless exempted by the government. This is a serious violation of the law.
She appealed to all monarchs in the state to join local governments and sensitize residents in facilitating monthly programs aimed at preventing the outbreak of communicable diseases in the state.
Addressing the monarch, Mr. Ahuye said: “Kabiyesi, what I saw today here at Igbara Odo market is wrong and the government of Governor Biodun Oyebunji frowns on such acts.
“How is it possible that so many people are selling things in the market during an environmental health exercise? Health is an asset and our people must learn how to prioritize their health. No. This starts with maintaining environmental cleanliness and hygiene.
“This program is aimed at ensuring that the public does not spend money that could be used to develop themselves on opportunistic diseases. If you clean up your environment, you will be doing yourself a huge benefit.
“I would like to appeal that such a scenario should not be repeated next month. Our citizens must be carefully and correctly guided on how to abide by the law. From 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at home You have nothing to lose by cleaning up your surroundings.”
Oba Jayola, in his response, commended Governor Oyebunji’s government for its love for the people and assured him that such acts would not be repeated in the next exercise.
“I can assure you, your Excellency, that this program is for our own benefit, so it will not be repeated next month.
The Deputy Governor visited Ilawe, where the National Assembly is headquartered, and commended the residents for fully following the exercise and maintaining the cleanliness of the environment.
She praised the efforts of Council President Richard Apollola, which led to good behavior by residents, and appealed to residents to maintain such ethical standards next time.
Mr. Apollola assured the government that the high level of compliance observed in Ilawe-Ekiti would be replicated in other towns in the assembly in the next assembly.
