EFCC charges couple over N2.7 billion fraud in Lagos
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Lagos Zonal Command, arraigned a couple, Oriyomi Idowu and Ruth Idowu, before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offenses Court, based in Ikeja, Lagos.
They were charged on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, with 20 counts bordering on obtaining money by false pretences, money laundering, theft, retaining stolen property and forgery worth N2, 7 billion,
According to the commission, the suspects were indicted alongside Food Commodity Processing Enterprise, Bonway Food Processing Company Limited, Samee Idowu Company Limited and Farmex Integrated Companies Limited, all owned by Ruth Idowu.
One of the tallies reads: “Ruth Sameeha Idowu aka Loiry Ventures, Oriyomi Kabeer Idowu aka Yocli Ventures, Food Commodity Processing Enterprise, Bonway Food Processing Company Ltd, Samee Idowu Company Limited, Farmex Integrated Companies Limited, at some point of 2023 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable court, converted the sum of N10,000,000 for the purchase of a GLK Benz, purchase sum derived from the conversion of the sum of N500,000,000 belonging to Creditpro Business Support Services for the purpose to disguise the illegal origin of the funds. ”
The defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges when they were read to them.
Taking into account their pleas, the prosecution lawyer, Bilikisu Buhari, asked the court for a trial date and preventive detention of the accused in a Correctional Centre.
The lawyer for the first accused, G. Onwubuya, informed the court about his client’s bail application, which was yet to be handed over to the prosecution.
He prayed that the court remanded the defendants in EFCC custody and also sought a brief adjournment for the hearing and determination of the bail application.
The judge found that there was no bail application before the court for the second defendant, whose lawyer, JJ Ogunyemi, had not yet filed the application.
Consequently, Justice Dada adjourned the matter until December 15, 2023 and ordered that the defendants be detained at the Correctional Center “pending the hearing and determination of their bail applications.”
