ECOWAS court orders Republic of Benin to pay CFA 20 million to Igboho state on Sunday

The government of the Republic of Benin has been ordered to pay CFA 20 million to Yoruba agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho.

The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, in Abuja ruled that the amount was compensation for the violation of Igboho's fundamental rights and illegal detention.

In a unanimous judgment by Justices Gbeli Be Ouattara, Sengu M. Coloma and Ricardo Claudio Monteiro Gonçalves, the Court issued the following order in this matter: ECW/CCJ/APP/15/22, Chief Sunday Adeyemo v. Republic of Benin.

According to the court, the Republic of Benin must comply with the order within three months and report to the court with proof of payment.

Igboho was arrested in Cotonou in 2021 as he was attempting to leave the country for Germany.

This was after he was declared wanted by the State Department, DSS, after his residence in Ibadan was raided and he eloped from Nigeria.
