ECOWAS Court finds Nigerian government guilty of human rights abuses during #EndSARS protests

The Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has found the Nigerian government guilty of human rights violations in its handling of the #EndSARS protests in October 2020.

In a ruling on Wednesday, July 10, the court ruled that the Nigerian government’s actions, particularly the excessive use of force at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, violated several international human rights standards. These violations include violations of Articles 1, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 11 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The court ordered the Nigerian government to pay N2 million in compensation to each victim named in the suit.
