DSS arrests suspect in Niger for illegal gun possession

A suspect named Usman Abubakar was arraigned at the Minna Chief Magistrate Court 1 for allegedly being in possession of two automatic pump-action rifles and four cartridges.

The Niger State Police Command, in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), prosecuted the person in court.

The defendant was found to have a concealed firearm in his bag. He was taken to the magistrate's court by DSS officials and arraigned by Malam Abdulmalik Sani, head of the command's legal department.

The First Information Report (FIR) filed in court outlined a single charge against Abubakar: illegal possession of a magnum pump-action firearm without lawful authority.

The FIR states: “You, Usman Abubakar, adult, male, Bororo, Beji Town, Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State, committed the criminal act on December 12, 2023 at Paiko within the jurisdiction of this Court,” viz. , you possessed two magnum pump action rifles with registration numbers 18-0223 and 18-0254, respectively, without lawful authority. During his interrogation, the head of the DSS Legal Department revealed that the defendant purchased the gun from Toto Company in Nasarawa State for six hundred thousand naira (N600,000) for self-defense as there were frequent armed bandit attacks on communities in Nasarawa State. He revealed that he confessed to what he had done.

In his plea for leniency, the defendant asked the court to consider his actions as a means of self-defense.

As a result, Chief Magistrate Hajiya Ummah Mohammed found him guilty and reserved the sentence until January 17 for sentencing.
