Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has vowed to remain focused on implementing development projects in the state despite the Court of Appeal’s ruling that the March 18 election was inconclusive.
Lawal said this while addressing a group of party members in Gusau shortly after his return from Abuja.
“We have nothing to worry about. We knew the people voted for us before and they are ready to vote for us again now.
“Our resolve to rescue the state remains unchanged as we see many development projects underway across the state.
“Our aim is to change the narrative of socio-economic development,” he said.
He called on supporters to continue monitoring and complying with the law.
He said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would win even if the re-election was for the entire state.
Also speaking was the Acting Chairman of the state PDP, Alhaji Muktar Rugga, who commended the party faithful who came out en masse to welcome the governor.
He said the rally was to show love and loyalty to the state government.
The Abuja-based Court of Appeal has declared the March 18 gubernatorial election in Zamfara inconclusive.
Yesterday, the three-man committee, headed by Justice Oyebisi Folaemi and supported by Justices Cordelia Ifeoma Jombo-Ofo and Sybil Nwaka Gbagi, in a unanimous decision, Governor Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) The reinstatement as the winner was invalidated. Justice Nwaka, who read out the presiding judgment, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold three local government bodies in the state where no elections had been held or the results of the various polling bodies had not been collated so far. He ordered new elections to be held in the region. The affected municipalities are Maradun, Birnin Magaji and Bukuyum.
The court held that INEC erred in relying on information obtained from the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal to collate the final results of the governorship election.
The judgment came following an appeal filed in court by the immediate past governor, Bello Matawalle, who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election. Matawalle was later appointed Minister of Defense by President Bola Tinubu.
According to INEC, Matawalle lost the election by more than 65,000 votes. Specifically, INEC said Mr. Lawal received 377,726 votes and Mr. Matawalle received 311,976 votes. The court on September 18 upheld Mr Lawal’s selection, but Mr Matawalle proceeded to the Court of Appeal.
