Customs holds alumni reunion and promises to improve welfare for retired employees
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has held an alumni reunion and pledged to improve the welfare of retired staff of the service.
The report says successful organizations invest in training and transition programs to prepare retired professionals for advisory roles.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, made the pledge during a reunion and deployment of retired senior officers in Abuja with the theme “Our Customs Heroes”. He said the NCS needs to draw on the wealth of knowledge of former senior staff.
Mr Adeniyi explained that the aim of the Alumni Association was to overhaul the benefits of retired officers to ensure effective and efficient service delivery.
He said the NCS has begun a review of retiree benefits, digitized retiree verification and looks forward to establishing a pension committee.
He said: “Today, we embark on a journey to bridge the gap between the vibrant energy of our current workforce and the contemporary expertise of our retired colleagues.
“The importance of this connection has been proven in a variety of successful organizations that lack the depth of experience of retirees.”
He explained that this reunion symbolizes a commitment to unity and stronger and more resilient practices for future development.
He added: “With your continued support and guidance, and of course your prayers until the time comes, we are confident that we will overcome the challenges and achieve greater heights. We have initiated a number of measures aimed at ameliorating the plight. Firstly, the Gazette regulations are currently undergoing a thorough review and consideration to enhance the benefits of retired officers.
“Furthermore, HRD and the Human Resources Department will be proactive in migrating the current attestation duties of retired officers and migrating them from physical to digital formats, streamlining and expediting the process.”
“We are grateful for the wisdom and dedication of all of you who have contributed to your service to the Nigeria Customs Service. It is in our interest to take this opportunity to celebrate you.
“This event connects the past, present and future of the Nigerian Customs Administration. It bridges the gap between past management and current Customs officials.”
He urged retired officers to not only benefit from this code, but also to see it as an opportunity to give back to the organization that has been an important part of their lives for more than 30 years.
