C’River records 586 cases of gender-based violence in 10 months

Cross River State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Edema Irom, said the state recorded 586 cases of gender-based violence (GBV) from January to October.

She made this statement at a press conference to launch the 16-day protest against GBV in Calabar on Saturday.

He clarified that the statistics include only incidents reported to the government.

Mr Irom said that to combat the epidemic, the ministry is working with non-governmental organizations to set up a real-time reporting agency for GBV cases in 18 local governments in the state.

“We have a technical working group (TWG) whose members are drawn from ministries and NGOs to find ways around this problem.

“The TWG will meet quarterly to review efforts taken to address this issue,” she said.
