Court postpones Emefiele’s trial until January 2024
The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele until Thursday and Friday, January 18 and 19, 2024.
Emefiele faces six amended indictments close to alleged procurement fraud worth N1.6 billion.
Emefiele pleaded not guilty and was granted bail on Friday, November 17, in the amount of N300 million with two sureties.
After meeting his bail conditions, he was remanded to the Kuje Correctional Center on a pending basis.
A prosecution witness, a top official at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), testified at the resumed hearing that Emefiele was neither the owner nor the shareholder of April 1616 Investment Limited. The company has signed a vehicle supply contract worth NOK 1.2 billion from CBN based on: Emefiele leadership.
Witnesses, who were not named in court, presented several documents detailing how the company was formed on August 1, 2016. It also read out the names of the company’s shareholders, including Aminu Yaro, Maryam Abdullahi and Saadatou Yaro. Co-owner of an entity.
Emefiele’s lawyer, Matthew Burka, declined to comment on the proceedings today, saying Emefiele had not yet met his bail conditions.
Lawyers for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the federal government also declined to comment on the proceedings.
The trial is scheduled to resume on Thursday and Friday, January 18 and 19, 2024.
