Coup: “Lift sanctions on Niger now” – Shehu Sani to EU, ECOWAS

Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani called for the immediate lifting of sanctions against the Republic of Niger by the European Union and Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS.

DAILY POST reported that in July 2023, some military officers led by former Presidential Guard Commander General Abdullahmane Chiani ousted President Mohamed Bazoum of the Republic of Niger.

In response, ECOWAS and the EU imposed sanctions against the West African country.

But sanctions seem to only cause more hardship to the poor and make their lives harder.

“The ECOWAS and EU sanctions imposed on the Republic of Niger are impacting the country’s capacity and capacity to fight terrorism,” Sani, who served as the 8th senator, wrote for X.

“We are witnessing an escalation in terrorist attacks in Nigeria’s border states.

“In the interest of the collective security of the West African region, these sanctions must be lifted.”
